Austin’s Family Friendly Activities and Attractions

Austin may not be one of the largest cities in Texas, but it is, after all the capital, and it has no shortage of cultural attractions, many of which families might like to visit together.

One of the biggest historical attractions is the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library & Museum, which houses the papers and mementos of that president. Libraries devoted to presidents are always fascinating, but this is the only one in which no entrance fee is charged. The exhibits are constantly being changed. Current exhibits include America: 1908 – 1973, describing the changes the country underwent during Johnson’s lifetime, and a model of the Oval Office as it looked when he was president.Additional information can be found at http://natureseek.wordpress.com/2011/06/12/austin-bats/. Visitors may also take home items that were assembled for giveaway by the President and First Lady, including silver coins with the presidential seal on them, busts of LBJ, and bookmarks Johnson made from skin of the deer on his ranch. A gift shop is also present.

Texas National Science Center, part of the Austin campus of the University of Texas, often holds events specially for parents and children. On Sunday, October 9, 2011, they will be having Family Fossil Fun Day, which will include story time and crafts activities based on fossils. (The museum will be closed until that time for maintenance.) And Halloween will see Fright at the Museum, a free event that will involve a visit to the local “dinosaur graveyard” and introduction to bizarre deep sea fish.

Zilker Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful of its kind anywhere. It actually consists of several gardens, each of which has its own theme. Families might like to take a stroll down the Doug Blachly Butterfly Trail & Garden, where one can see numerous beautiful butterflies flying among the colorful local flowers.
